Webinar to help organic growers integrate crops and livestock
Organic growers interested in integrating livestock into their operations are invited to join an upcoming educational session focused on crop-livestock integration.
The webinar, scheduled for Thursday, June 26, from 2 to 3 p.m. EDT, is part of the Organic Farming Research Foundation’s (OFRF) Seeds of Success series and aims to help organic producers navigate the complexities of combining livestock and crop production systems.
Crop-livestock integration is a holistic approach that incorporates both animal and crop farming on the same land or within the same operation. Advocates say this method can enhance soil health, diversify income and reduce input costs. However, for organic farmers, the practice often involves navigating additional challenges related to National Organic Program (NOP) standards.
The session will highlight three organic farmers who have successfully implemented crop-livestock systems:
- Ben Coerper of Wild Harmony Farm
- Tomia MacQueen of Wildflower Farm
- Raymond Hain of the Grain Place Foundation
Each presenter will share their experiences managing integrated systems and discuss how they’ve built resilient operations while meeting organic certification requirements. The session will also feature a facilitated Q&A to give participants the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with their peers.
Organizers say the goal is to foster a practical, farmer-led dialogue about how organic producers are overcoming barriers and building dynamic farm systems that include both crops and livestock.
The webinar is free to attend and designed for producers of all sizes who are either currently integrating livestock or considering the transition.
Registration for the Crop Livestock Integration webinar is available on the OFRF’s website.
