MSU to offer webinar on organic pesticides
Growers looking to sharpen their pest management knowledge have an opportunity to learn from an organic production expert during an upcoming Organic Pesticide Management webinar hosted by Michigan State University Extension.
The one-hour session, part of MSU’s Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP), will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, from 12 to 1 p.m. ET.
Galen Dively, professor emeritus at the University of Maryland and an integrated pest management (IPM) consultant, will lead the discussion. Dively will cover how to select and apply organic-approved pesticides wisely, balancing efficacy with environmental stewardship.
Following his presentation, attendees will take part in a group discussion on organic pesticide choices and nonchemical alternatives to manage pests more sustainably.
Pest control is one of the most persistent challenges in organic farming. Conventional pesticides are often off the table, and success depends on knowing how to combine biological, cultural, and chemical tools within an organic framework.
The webinar is designed to help participants:
- Identify how organic-approved pesticides differ from conventional options
- Integrate them effectively into an IPM system
- Strengthen on-farm decision-making to meet certification standards and production goals
The session is geared toward Extension educators, conservation district staff, crop consultants and other technical service providers, but organic growers and transitioning farmers will also benefit from the insights and resources shared.
Participation is free, but registration is required. Visit the MSU Extension event page to sign up. For questions, contact Katie Brandt at brandtk7@msu.edu.
TOPP supports farmers who are transitioning to or maintaining organic certification. The program connects producers with mentorship, training and technical assistance to advance organic practices across the region.
