USDA launches 2025 Organic Survey

USDA will conduct its 2025 Organic Survey to collect updated data on organic production, marketing practices and farm finances across the U.S.

NASS began mailing survey codes to selected producers in early December, allowing them to respond online. Paper questionnaires will be mailed in early January. Responses are due by Feb. 5, 2026, and results are scheduled for release Oct. 30, 2026.

The survey will be sent to all known certified organic farms and ranches in the 50 states, as well as producers transitioning to certified organic production. The questionnaire asks for information on:

  • Organic acreage
  • Production
  • Sales
  • Income
  • Expenses
  • Production and marketing practices

“Organic agriculture is a growing industry, and it is our job as a federal statistical agency to help measure this part of the agriculture sector,” said Joseph Parsons, administrator, National Agricultural Statistics Service, in a USDA release. “We are excited to provide data on organic agriculture that will help inform organic producers and other industry professionals to make informed decisions for their operations.”

Because the Organic Survey is part of the Census of Agriculture program, participation is required by federal law. The data are protected under Title 7 of the U.S. Code, which requires producers to respond and mandates that USDA keep individual identities and responses confidential.

Producers who receive the survey may complete the 2025 Organic Survey online or return the questionnaire by mail.

According to NASS, the data collected will be used to assess the economic impact of organic agriculture and provide policymakers, researchers and industry stakeholders with updated benchmarks on the sector.
