Seed production course applications due tomorrow

Applications for the Organic Seed Alliance’s 2023 Organic Seed Production online course are due by the end of the day tomorrow.

The interactive, cohort-based course includes six modules over six months. Designed to supplement an on-farm seed production training experience, the course is open to any beginning producer working on a seed farm.

The course, which will run from March through August, focuses on the biological, technical and economic aspects of organic seed production. Its goals are to cultivate a network of seed growers committed to educating the next generation of seed farmers and advocates, to provide seed farmers with real-world experience in seed production and to help alleviate the ongoing shortage of organic seed.

Each course module features pre-recorded videos on course topics, supplemental reading material with links to additional resources and a short quiz, prompt or assignment. Two 60- to 90-minute group discussions per month will take place on course materials, assignments and on-farm activities.

A season crop tracking project can include a crop production report and enterprise budget, crop history or other project, while a farm internship will include field-based training at a host site.

Participants can expect a workload of two to three hours per week of independent study plus two to three hours per month of live meetings.
