The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) recognized 14 state and territorial agriculture leaders for at least 10 years of service during its 2026 annual meeting in Portland, Maine.

The recognition marked the launch of NASDA’s annual Years of Service Ceremony, which honors members for their service to their states and the association. Three members received awards for more than 20 years of service, five were recognized for at least 15 years and six for at least 10 years.

Former Rhode Island Division of Agriculture Chief Ken Ayers, who retired this year after 28 years of service, received a 20-plus-year award. South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers was recognized for 22 years, while North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler was recognized for 20 years.

The 15-plus-year recipients were Doug Goehring of North Dakota, Louis Peterson of the Virgin Islands, Karen Ross of California, Mike Strain of Louisiana and Jeff Witte of New Mexico.

The 10-plus-year recipients were Richard Ball of New York, Sid Miller of Texas, Doug Miyamoto of Wyoming, Russ Redding of Pennsylvania, Derek Sandison of Washington and Wes Ward of Arkansas.

“These members have given their experience and expertise to NASDA to help hone federal regulation and craft policy,” Ted McKinney, NASDA CEO, said.

NASDA also recognized John Baugh, former Purdue University director of Agricultural Services and Regulations, who recently retired after more than 30 years in that role.
